I was ask to be a judge for an Art Competition involving high school student from all over the county. I was honored to be asked and more than happy to do it.

The talent of these students competing was absolutely amazing. I’m talking college to professional level work. Being a designer I was selected to judge design and photography. I would say I spent about two hours of my time walking through the exhibit thoroughly enjoy the work of all of the young artists. I made my notes and selections and turned them in.

The next day I was contacted about being compensated and was told that I would be receiving $75 for my time. I told them to keep it. They explained all the judges are compensated for their time and they could not keep it. So I did the next best thing when I went to get the check I brought my own check with the same amount and gave it to the very under funded art club.

My point here is not get pat on the back or look for praise for donating. As professionals in the art field I feel it is important show we can give back we all started where these kids are. This is the field we love and the subject matter we deal in everyday. We shouldn’t need to be compensated to walk around an art exhibit for an hour or two and give some much needed acknowledgement to a talented group of young artists.
